A Return to Roots? - Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength 2026 Committee Release

Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength 2026 Committee Release

Date: 2026-03-02

Distillery: Ardbeg

ABV: 61.7%

As Ardbeg first Committee Release of 2026, this Ardbeg Ten Cask Strength bids farewell to the flamboyant, whimsical label designs of recent years. Instead, it returns to basics with a clean, classic cream-coloured label. One can’t help but wonder: does this signal a return to their original craft, leaving behind the superficiality of some recent experimental works? Let's find out.

The Nose: The initial aroma is comfortingly familiar. A wave of hay, sea tide, brine, and firewood-like peat hits the senses - robust, full-bodied, and slightly rugged. At 61.7% ABV, the nose is understandably tight at first. After some time in the glass, sweeter layers begin to emerge: crème brûlée, shortbread, malt, and a nostalgic hint of honey drops. Underlying these are subtle coastal notes of seaweed and oyster shells. While the profile is direct and uncomplicated—likely due to the bottle being freshly opened—its bold and wild character is exactly what I envision an ideal Ardbeg to be.

The Palate: Compared to the nose, the palate is far more explosive. The high ABV delivers a powerful alcoholic punch that bursts in the mouth. Once the initial heat subsides, a wave of sweetness follows immediately—notes of ash, buttery biscuits, black pepper, and spices mingle with a faint oceanic savouriness. Thanks to the cask strength intensity, the mouthfeel is significantly oilier and richer than the standard 10-year-old "Black Label," offering a much fuller flavour profile.

The Finish: Medium to long. Interestingly, a fresh sweetness reminiscent of peach skin emerges toward the end. It’s a delicate touch I’ve never quite experienced in the standard Ardbeg Ten, and it’s undeniably pleasant.

Is this "White Label" Ardbeg Ten a long-overdue gesture of sincerity from the distillery, or a strategic "rescue" for a softening market? Personally, I sincerely hope it’s the former.
